It was eight years ago last month that I took my "dream vacation" to Iceland (see my blog: http://toiceland-2018.blogspot.com/). It was an fantastic experience, and I knew that I wanted to go back some day. But, I often say that, and it never happens. The reason is because I like to visit places I've never been to before, and there is no shortage of amazing places that I haven't visited.
But Iceland is a little different. First, it truly is an exceptional place, full of other-worldly, diverse, and grandiose landscapes. Second, in my case, I visited only a small fraction of the places to see and photograph (one location on my list was even closed for environmental reasons). Third, and most importantly, Icelandair was offering a great deal on airfares, including directly out of Detroit! Perhaps the only "catch" was that I had to return a week later; otherwise, the airfare increased dramatically.
Ok, I could do it in week, I thought, particularly since I knew the "lay of the land" and could focus on a short(er) list of locations to photograph. Still, I hemmed and hawed a bit whether to go. I told myself if I could find a good deal on a campervan I would do it. Initially, I struggled to find any available campervans since the travel window wasn't too far in the future (they were all booked). I kept looking, however, and eventually found one! Done deal...I'm going back! In fact, my flight leaves this evening!
I will be there over the summer solstice, which means there will be anywhere from 21 to 24 hours of daylight, depending on the exact location in Iceland. For example, in Egilsstaðir, which is one of the places I will visit, the sun will set about 12:20 am and rise at about 1:36 am! Even then, the sun will only be slightly below the horizon such that the sky will still be illuminated. Of course, a lot of this depends on cloud cover, which can be highly variable and change rapidly in Iceland.
As with my other travel blogs, I will try to post every day or so, with pictures, though this always depends on connectivity to the internet. So stay tuned!
